Immune
A journey into the systems of the body
Many people think the immune system is a simple part of the body that acts in one specific way to fight off infections, but I would like to show them another perspective. When you get a cut, your finger starts to bleed a bit and it stings, and it hurts for a few minutes. You might put a plaster on it and forget about it until you remove the plaster. But inside your body, it's a whole other story. Millions of your cells are dying while bacteria from your skin enter your body. Meanwhile, your immune cells are fighting back, trying to kill as many bacteria as they can. All this happens while you put on your plaster and stop thinking about the cut you got. Meanwhile, some viruses are sneaking down the trachea into your lungs, once they get into the bronchi, they start infecting your cells, start to multiply after killing your cells, and cause havoc in your lungs. Other types of immune cells, unlike the ones fighting the bacteria, find the infected cells and kill them and the viruses inside. All of this while you sneeze, and realise you are not feeling that well.
Before we learn about how our body defends us against infections, we need to know which invaders are even infecting the body. We call these invaders pathogens. Some commonly known pathogens are bacteria and viruses, yet there are also some others that you can get infected by. These are worms, amoeba, fungi and parasites. But we’re mainly going to focus on the viruses and bacteria, so let’s take a look at them.
